Harv Stanic

Harv Stanic Artistic Assistant of Experimental Radio and educator (dipl. soc. and cult. anthropologist), Harv Stanic (b. 1966) joined the chair in Spring 2001. Coming from Amsterdam to Weimar to contribute and help the program explore possibilities in radio and media art, including: new wireless transmission technologies, linking Open Source theory and practice in a professional radio environment, try out new radio formats, research the contemporary popular music styles and electro-acoustic works with students, and discuss their respective projects and works of art in context of radio/art/acoustic space.

In the past Stanic initiated various Free and Open source initiatives Europe-wide, from the founding of ASCII (first internet cafe in the world running entirely on Linux and free of charge - 1997) and contributing to the organisation and support of various important events in modern day electronic media, art and culture (hal2001 - twente, n5m - amsterdam, connect congress - zurich, net-congestion - amsterdam, noborder - strassbourg, tech2 - bristol, hexpo - ljubljana etc.). But always linked to radio and netradio as a program maker and broadcast designer deeply rooted in a Free radio movement that originated in Amsterdam in the late 80s (radio100, vrije kaiser, dfm rtv. international). With an extensive bio in IT industry (qnx, embedded technologies, naval navigation systems), he has worked in Europe, South Africa and Japan and has given speeches and workshops at various international conferences and events always stressing the importance of Open Source software as a way out of proprietary and copyrighted realm.

At the moment, Stanic is compiling a reader about netradio and a new radio theory in the age of the internet in collaboration with various internationally dispersed authors. He is also busy setting up a summer season temporary radio station as an Europe-wide project to be realised in the next two years ... and still, occasionally, he makes music with various international collaborators.
